How much sun does a fruit tree need?

Fruit trees can be productive with as little as a half day of sun, but, except in hot desert climates, the more sun the better. Fruit trees depend on photosynthesis for the energy to sustain normal metabolism, health and vigor - including maturing the fruit to best quality.

Morning sun is good for drying dew from the foliage and preventing disease. In low desert climates, afternoon shade can minimize heat damage to the tree and sunburning of fruit.
