Blake’s Pride
A distinct blend of sugars, acids and other flavors give Blake’s Pride a rich, aromatic taste. This yellow and light-golden pear was developed by horticulturalist Richard Bell with the ARS Appalachian Fruit Research Station in Kearneysville, West Virginia. This excellent eating pear also is resistant to fire blight. Ripens 10 to 14 days after Bartlett.
Bosc
Long & narrow shape, brown skin. Superb quality, one of the best. Harvest late October. Fresh/cooked. Susceptible to fireblight in warm, moist climates. 800 hours. Pollinated by Bartlett or other pear.
California
Max Red Bartlett x Comice. Home orchard variety for hot inland valley climates: Redding, Fresno, Bakersfield. Yellowish-green with red blush. Excellent quality, very productive. August harvest. 700 hours. Self-fruitful. Pat. No. 3599.
Comice
The gift pack pear. Sweet, aromatic, fine texture, superb flavor and quality - one of the best. Short neck, greenish-yellow skin with red blush. Late harvest. 600 hours. Self-fruitful in arid West or plant with Bartlett.
D'Anjou
Large, short-necked, firm, good quality, keeps well. Harvest September 1st, one month after Bartlett in Central California. 800 hours. Pollinated by Bartlett.
Flemish Beauty
Medium to large, yellow with red blush, fine flavor, good canner. Just after Bartlett, fruit is best when it's ripened off of the tree. 800 hours.
Flordahome
Low-chill pear from Florida. Very nice quality: sweet, smooth-textured, juicy, flavorful. Harvest July/August in southern California. Early bloom. Chilling requirement less than 400 hours. Partly self-fruitful.
Harrow Delight
Fireblight-resistant, with fruit similar to Bartlett. Yellow skin with attractive red blush. Smooth, fine flesh is especially flavorful. Ripe two weeks before Bartlett. Heavy-bearing tree. Introduced in 1982 (Ontario, Canada). 800 hours. Interfruitful with Bartlett, Bosc, D’Anjou and Moonglow.
Hood
Very low chilling requirement, inter-fruitful with Flordahome. Large, early season fruit has yellow-green skin and sweet, mild-flavored flesh. Reported to be highly resistant to fireblight. 1-200 hours.
Kieffer
Medium to large late season fruit. Canning/cooking. Sprightly flavor, coarse texture. Resists fireblight, tolerates hot climates. Dependable crops. 350 hours. Self-fruitful.
Moonglow
Resists fireblight. Large fruit, use fresh or for canning. Productive, spur-type tree. Mid-season harvest. 700 hours. Pollenizer required, good pollenizer for other pears.
Orient
Fireblight resistant. Beautiful, large, nearly round fruits with shiny yellow skin and red blush. Flesh firm and juicy with mild flavor, used mainly for canning. Large, vigorous tree. Introduced in 1945, (Chico, Calif.). 350 hours. Interfruitful with Kieffer and Moonglow.
Potomac — Moonglow x Buerre D’Anjou
Ripens to a light green. Flesh texture is moderately fine and buttery. Pleasingly subacid flavor with mile aroma. Tree shows more resistance to fire blight than Seckel. Developed by the USDA and Ohio State University.
Red D'Anjou
Large, short-necked, firm. Stores well, excellent quality and smooth texture. Ripens with D'Anjou around Sept. 1st Strong full red color is very even unlike red Bartlett which has a blushed color. 800 hours pollinated by Bartlett.
Rescue
Sensational appearance: very large fruits with distinctive reddish-orange blush and stripes over yellow. Smooth, buttery flesh is sweet with a mild, pleasing flavor. For fresh use and canning. Consistently productive. Recommended for Western Washington and similar climates. 800 hours. Self-fruitful.
Seckle
Connoisseurs' favorite. Sweet, flavorful, spicy, aromatic, perhaps the best. Russeted brown skin. Resists fire- blight. 500 hours. Full crop 800 hours. Self-fruitful in arid West.
Sensation Red Bartlett
High quality Bartlett-type fruit with attractive red skin. Relatively small tree. 700 hours. Self-fruitful in arid West. Elsewhere, pollinated by Bosc, D'Anjou, or other pear.
Warren
Excellent quality dessert pear - and highly resistant to fireblight. Medium to large, long-necked fruit with pale green skin, sometimes blushed red. Smooth flesh (no grit cells) is juicy and buttery with superb flavor. Good keeper. Cold hardy to -20°F. From Mississippi. 600 hours. Self-fruitful.
