CHOCTAW
One of the best-flavored pecans. Very thin shell, easy to crack. Heavy-bearing, vigorous tree. Mid-season harvest. 250 hours. Pollinated by Western Schley.
GREENRIVER
Northern type. Long-shaped nuts of excellent quality. Larger than Major or Peruque, later harvest. Recommended for USDA hardiness zones 6-8. Partly self-fruitful, or plant with Major or Peruque.
KANZA
New introduction (1996). Consistent, heavy production of small to medium size nuts with a moderately thick shell. Disease-resistant, winter hardy, productive tree. Recommended for coldest parts of northern pecan growing region. Pollenizer recommended: interfruitful with Major and Peruque.
MAHAN
Largest pecan, thin shell,fine quality. Old variety, a parent of most of the newer varieties. Very late maturing, does best in low desert climates. 250hours. Self-fruitful.
MOHAWK
Very large, thin-shelled nut, excellent quality. Earliest maturing, so more widely adapted than others. Attractive tree is vigorous, bears young and heavy. Good choice for home planting. 250 hours. Self-fruitful.
PAWNEE
Early harvest southern type. Adapted to climates with growing seasons too short for Mahan or Western Schley, such as the northern Central Valley in California. Medium to large, thin-shelled nut. 250 hours. Partly self-fruitful, or plant with Mohawk.
PERUQUE
Thin-shelled northern type. Nuts larger than Major, harvest earlier. Recommended for USDA hardiness zones 6-8 and warmer parts of zone 5. Partly self-fruitful, or plant with Greenriver or Kanza.
TEJAS
Medium size, thin-shelled, fine flavor. Very vigorous, very precocious, heavy bearing. Densely foliated, attractive tree. Harvest early mid-season. 250 hours. Self-fruitful.
WESTERN SCHLEY
Easy to grow, hardy tree. Less fussy about soil and nutrition than other pecan varieties. Long, tapered, medium-sized, thin-shelled nuts. Fine quality, mid-season. 250 hours. Self-fruitful.
